There are many interviewing and job search tips...some good and some not so good. I have put together ten tips that I believe form a common sense approach to helping you secure an offer. A job offer is what you want! You can decide whether you would like to accept the offer, but you cannot be in the position to accept or reject it if you never receive the offer in the first place.
Following are the ten tips for your job search success:
1) Defining purpose: Define what you are looking for in a position. Some items to consider are: hours, duties, compensation plan and benefits. Obtain information from colleagues and other professionals to gain insight on the pros and cons of these subjects. Combine the findings with your personal preferences to formulate the parameters of your search. Make a list of your acceptable and unacceptable items to refer to and keep you grounded during your search.
2) Preparation: Practice! Practice! Practice! Anticipate possible questions and write answers for each. Do your homework before you interview. The internet provides a wealth of information on most industries and companies.
3) Punctuality: Do not just be on time, be a little early for each site and telephone interview.
4) Appearance: Arrive at the interview with a neat and clean appearance. Avoid being overly made-up. Dress conservatively and comfortably.
5) Body language: Eye contact is essential. If shaking hands, offer a firm handshake. Erect posture shows confidence. Sit down only after being offered a chair.
6) Portfolio: Show the interviewer that you plan ahead. Bring copies of necessary information (resume and references). A legal notebook for taking notes is always recommended. Formulate a list of questions to help you properly evaluate the opportunity. Use the same list for each interview so you are comparing positions with equal amounts of information.
7) Enthusiasm: Bring an absolutely positive attitude into the interview without being too familiar. Negativism is not allowed. Sell yourself. The difference between bragging and self confidence is enthusiasm.
8) Smile: A genuine heart warming smile can win over anyone.
9) Thank you: At the end of each interview, thank the interviewer for their time. Follow up with a thank you note highlighting various points discussed during the visit.
10) Optional: Use a professional recruiter. Have a professional recruiter handle the search process for you. The task can be overwhelming to organize and maintain.

If you are looking for a job, you are likely to search online. The good news? There are many job search sites for you to choose from. Aside from the larger and well-known sites, there are also those that are locally run and operated. Regardless of which website you use, how you search is very important. After all, the fastest way to seek employment is to find jobs that you are qualified for.

Here are three different ways that you can find open positions that you are qualified for online:
Job Search Tip #1 - Search with the Job Title Name
This is a pretty simple approach, yet it is the best. What position are you looking to find? Is it a retail manager? If so, ideal search phrases include retail management, retail manager, or store manager. Is it a work at home sales position? If so, ideal search phrases include home based sales, inbound sales rep, work at home sales, and so forth.
Job search sites pull keywords from your search and pair it with keywords inside a job listing. Since a company always labels a job with the title, this method of searching produces the best results.
Job Search Tip #2 - Search with Job Duty
Another way to find a job on a job search site is to do a search with a duty. For example, a retail worker often must perform sales work, customer service, and checking out customers. Ideal search phrases include customer service, cashier, sales, and so forth.
As previously stated, job search sites pull keywords from your search phrase and attempt to match up those phrases with keywords inside a job listing posted online. While the best results are produced by using a job title, you can search with a job duty instead as well. The only downside is that some duties are similar for a wide range of jobs; therefore, you are likely to get more non-relevant results with this approach.
Job Search Tip #3 - Search with Company Name
Do you want to work for a specific company? If so, you can also do a search with that company name. If you are looking for a better paying job, this approach is ideal. However, if you are looking for any decent position that will provide a paycheck now, it is best to use one of the above mentioned options that produces more results.
While this method of searching job sites does work, results are not guaranteed. Why? While a good percentage of companies do include their company name, some like to keep this information hidden. While it won't hurt to use this method of searching when seeking employment, know that you do have other options. You should use those other options if your search does not produce any results.

Of course, the quality of your tools matters a great deal! Just like a carpenter can hammer a nail with any old hammer, the quality of the hammer itself will partially determine how many nails he or she can hammer during the course of the job, along with the force with which the hammer can be used.
If the hammer is a piece of junk, that carpenter will be lucky if he or she gets through a full day of framing.
And so it is with your job seeker toolkit. Decent resume assistance without great cover letter writing help might get you closer to an interview - or might even win you an interview - but imagine how much more productive your job search will be if you have better tools than everyone else!
Of course, one of the biggest obstacles for job seekers is know exactly where to start to find good cover letter writing help! Here are two solid tips to help you narrow down your search, and to save you a little time:
Tip #1: Go to your favorite search engine and type in a few variations of the kind of assistance you are seeking. However, if you simply type in "cover letter," you are likely to get millions of search engine results. If you don't believe me, try it! Once you do that, how on earth can you narrow down what you really need? So instead, try typing "Cover Letter Writing Help" - you can even use quotations marks to get really focused! Or, try "Job Seeker Toolkit" and see what you get.
You'll likely get a few less results, and will be far more relaxed and far less stressed!
Tip #2: Now, go ahead a read a few of the articles and resources that you find. At some point, someone or another will have an approach that "resonates" with you and your style. In other words, something you read will either catch your eye or spark your interest. Perhaps a service or a simple cover letter writing software will be just the thing. If it feels good, that is a good indicator that you have located a resource that will work well for you.
And why is that? Because if it feels like a good system or tool, you will USE it! And as you do, if it feels good, that will be reflected in the quality of your cover letter writing! Which means your cover letters will have more spark, more energy, and reflect you in a good light.
If it does not feel like a good fit, then that particular brand or style of cover letter writing help is not for you. And that means you WON'T use it! Which of course means you'll be right back where you started!
These two small tips in themselves can set you on the right path whether you are seeking cover letter writing help or any other type of job search help. Try it!

100% Profile Completeness: A Dilemma For Job Seekers

One common question that arises is, "If you are a job seeker, how should you complete the 'current position' item in your profile?"
LinkedIn presents job seekers with a dilemma: The site requires an "up-to-date current position (with a description)" for a 100% complete profile (see Profile Completeness list on LinkedIn); and according to LinkedIn, 100% complete profiles are 40 times more likely to be viewed. But if you are a job seeker, you might not have a current position other than "job seeker." Should you create a "filler" job description to be 100% complete? Or should you hope that 95%-or-so complete is enough?
Adding to this dilemma is that recruiters, according to experts in the careers industry, do not like to see made-up job descriptions in the current position spot. They prefer for job seekers to call a spade a spade, i.e., leave the current position description blank if they are not employed.
Resume and LinkedIn profile writers come down on multiple sides of this issue. There are upsides and downsides to all of these options; in the end, let the numbers (how many people find you, view your profile and contact you) guide your choice.
Option #1
One camp says to put something in the current position field indicating you are a job seeker. You might give yourself a job title such as "Target position: VP Operations," or "Seeking next opportunity as Graphic Designer." You can then write a description of what you offer that adds to what you wrote in your Summary. In the company name field, you might enter "-"or "Seeking next opportunity."
Option #2
Some people recommend putting volunteer work as your current position, or your "job" as Manager of a LinkedIn group. I would not recommend either solution unless your volunteer or group manager work is close to full-time. There is a section you can add on LinkedIn called Volunteer Activities and Causes. That is the most appropriate spot in which to put your volunteer activities.
Option #3
A third camp says to leave the current job description blank if you don't have a job, and to complete as many parts of the profile as possible. If your profile is 95% complete, you should still do well in searches.
The Essay Expert's Recommendation
You might want to try both Option #1 and Option #3. I wouldn't recommend Option #2.
The great thing about LinkedIn profiles is that you can always change them and do different things to see what works best for you. Try this:
  1. Write a current position that says, for example, "Target Position: General Manager, Automotive" or "Seeking Opportunities as Financial Analyst" or "Program Manager - Candidate" and track how many people view your profile and how often you are appearing in search results (this information can be found on your home page in the right-hand column).
  2. If you are getting sufficient activity in your profile, great. Don't change anything! If not, the first thing to consider is whether you have enough connections to appear toward the top of searches. I recommend having 500+ connections in order to reliably raise your ranking in search results and increase page views.
  3. If you have 500+ connections and your profile is still not getting enough attention, either change what you have in the "current position" section or make it blank for a month. Track your profile views and appearances in search results.
  4. Repeat Steps #2 and #3 until you get the results you want.

What Every Job Seeker Needs to Know

Resume writing is not a standardized industry. Although some states are considering legislation to require licensing, so far, the industry has been open to operate without government regulation.
THAT IS GREAT NEWS!
And not just for the resume writer, but for the job seeker as well.
Why, you might ask? Well, it means that the field is wide open to choose from, that it is currently being standardized by professional associations run by none-other-than résumé professionals (and not by government bureaucrats), and that prices are set based on market demand and not on government restrictions.
If you think resumes are expensive now, just wait until the government starts playing around with the industry! Not to mention the fact that the number of writers out there will dwindle down to where job seekers primarily only have large-scale firms to choose from.
Of course, the lack of regulation also means that job seekers can get swindled if they aren't careful in picking out their writer. No doubt different bosses have different personalities and leadership styles and the more you are okay with the style of your supervisor leader the happier you will be with your new employer. This principle is called person-supervisor fit and refers to the extent of similarity of personality, values, and goals between job seeker and leader-supervisor.

My colleagues and I have been having a discussion recently over what the most useful websites every created are. Some people went for social media sites like Facebook because it makes it so much easier for us to communicate with friends, family and the wider world. Others said it was government and public organisation websites because they provided so much useful information including health advice, legal advice and help with the law.
However the over-riding opinion was that jobs vacancies websites are the most useful websites on the internet for modern society.
This is because they make job hunting so much easier and open up possibilities to people that they would have had no way of knowing about twenty years ago. All because the internet has allowed the world to communicate with each other from one town, county, nation and continent to another, all in the click of a mouse.
Now you may say that this is the internet in general, but without these dedicated jobs vacancies websites, we still would not have easy access to all of the job vacancies around the world.
Jobs vacancies do differ in quality and usefulness but there are some brilliant ones out there. The national job vacancies are the best, especially those on the websites for national newspapers. They allow you to search in preference of location, salary size, job type, industry and level within the company.

How Can I Protect My Wages From Wage Garnishment?

Wage garnishment does not apply to particular kinds of income. Even if a court has issued an order enabling an employer to garnish your wages, there are still exempt incomes that cannot be withheld to pay the creditor. Knowing what are the types of income that falls under the exception is important in protecting your wages from creditors.
Those that are exempted from the coverage of wage garnishment include wages, salary, social security, welfare, or unemployment compensation. Certain types of exemptions will only be applicable to heads of households. But most of these will apply to any person in general. It is important to note, however, that there are states, which do not consider income of independent contractors or sole owners of corporations as exempt wages.
All those that are considered exempt income cannot be forcibly taken by the creditor as payment of debt. Specifically, the exemption applies to certain types of income according to federal law such as Public Assistance (PA), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security, Social Security Disability (SSD), Veterans benefits (VA), child support, spousal maintenance, workers compensation, unemployment insurance, railroad retirement benefits, and black lung benefits.
There are also limitations to the amount of earnings that can be garnished in a workweek or pay period. The Consumer Credit Protection Act allows only an amount equal to the lesser of 25 percent of disposable earnings or the amount by which disposable earnings are greater than 30 times the federal minimum hourly wage that is set by the Fair Labor Standards Act. Hence, this protection will apply regardless of the number of garnishment orders the employee receives.
It must be noted, however, that all states do not exempt wage garnishment for child support, alimony, taxes and federal student loans. There are varying laws on garnishment for each state but the general guideline is if the wages to be garnished according to a state law is more than the wages allowed by federal law, the federal law must prevail.
One of the best ways to ensure protection against wage garnishment is to create a separate wage account in a bank. This is intended to help in separating protected wages from money acquired from other sources. But in some instances, a separate wage account is not required. For instance, Florida laws protect up to 100% of the head of household's wages from being garnished despite its getting mixed with other funds. This applies if you are able to show which deposited funds are the your wages.
When taking this option of creating a wage account, it must be kept in mind that debt collectors can also seek to freeze accounts. But if your account contains only the exempt funds, then the account can be released from any garnishment. Some states may vary in terms of the exemption period. In Florida, the wages cannot be garnished within six months as long as these are clearly segregated and identified as wages. In New York, only ten percent of the gross income can be garnished or the maximum amount allowed by federal law, whichever is less. If the garnished wages are applied to alimony, support or maintenance, the total combined amount should not exceed 25% of disposable earnings.
Some states like California applies the same guidelines provided by federal law. The state of Massachusetts may permit garnished wages of up to $125 per week. Pennsylvania, on the other hand, allows only garnishment for taxes and child support.
It is best to get more information of your state's rules on wage accounts and wage garnishment by creditors. Be informed of your rights so you can protect yourself from having bank accounts frozen and wage garnished by creditors. After all, the acts of creditors may violate existing rules on exemption for garnishment in your state.
